Jumplist-Launcher

jumplist-launcher-icon

To-Do

  • irgendwelche Ideen?

FAQ

Q: Im Programm treten seltsame Fehler auf
A: Die Daten enthalten wahrscheinlich Fehler.

A: Kopieren Sie den gesamten Jumplist-Launcher-Ordner irgendwo anders hin.
Beide Jumplist-Launcher.exe benutzen unterschiedliche Daten. Deshalb können Sie ihnen unterschiedliche
Dateien/Programme zuweisen.

This seems to be one of the best tools I added to my Windows so far! Nice work! (FYI, I found it using freewaregenius.com).

I love the fact that I can create several instances of this app with different content! It would be nice however if I could choose a different icon for each taskbar entry (thus for the .exe) myself.

Another (very) minor bug: when dragging the “Desktop” folder to the app it does not use the correct icon; it uses the default folder icon instead.

    Hallo Ali,

  • m4rvin

Thank you for this nice tool!

But here is another bug report for the current release (7.1). The Launcher is installed on Windows 7 x64, pinned in start menu with a default entry mark set (so that it launches my own link on left-click and not the jump-launcher). As I prepare the system for someone that should not be disturbed by too much menu options (confusing icons, symbols, links..), I removed Jump-Launcher’s automatically generated “Configuration” entry that appears with the default check box feature enabled. I was lucky this option was still offered, but after modifying the list (the JL was sill opened) and pressing “Update Jumplist”, an EOleException raised with “unknown reason”. Another box appeared with the message “Couldnt create Jumplist. This issue… Please post details about your system in my blog”. So, here it is.

Obviously I corrupted the dat-files by removing the entry via explorer. I realize the mechanism now, that, one cannot restart the JumpLauncher without the entry and without removing the defaultstart-dat-file. Obviously, the automatically generated entry is necessary. But anyway, I would be glad, if there was another way / another entry into the configuration (not in the jump list). Please note, this problem will also occur when someone accidently unpins the jump list. The user wont be able to enter the configuration anymore (without removing the defaultstart-file). As it is very obvious, I guess, you already know about this issue and I also see that a clean solution is hard to implement (may be, with two exe-files, one for config and one as the jumplist-dummy that scans upon start if it is still pinned). May be, in order to switch back to the config, a start-with-left-click+shift-hack or so would be a very simple hack to implement?

typo: current release is 7.2, not 7.1

    • Guillaume

It’s completely unworkable. Loads of bugs in the interface, random crashes, anything with parameters doesn’t work, some programs don’t start (“Datie wurde nicht gefunden”), ugly icons. It’s the perfect idea with the worst implementation you could imagine. Very sloppy programming. I would prefer to just have a program with no interface that at least works…

    • Ali

      @Guillaume:
      Make a better one!
No one forces you to use it.

I really don’t have much time because I have much more important stuff going on.
I am willing to iron out all bugs, but it will take some time.

    • m4rvin

Even though my bug report is a bit lengthy, it is meant to be a constructive feedback and not to kick off a bashing against the tool or the honorable author. (Any frustrations should be directed to Microsoft who forgot or denied to implement such features. Despite the hype around Win7 within the media, I find the window manager is still a big disappointment. Consider their efforts and the long time they develop it!)

This tool is very useful and I like it anyway!

And I am quite familiar with programming. Whether it is sloppy or not, that is not the point in my case (and I think, for most other users, too), because it does not run all the time and thus does not affect system stability etc. It is good enough to setup the jump list. And whenever it crashes during configuration, it is possible to restart by deleting the dat-files. Of course, this is exhausting when the lists are long, but its up to the user to enter a long link list a second time. Simply backup the dat-files or the whole folder before a change.

However, here is another bug report (same setup): it is not possible to import a link to a network path such as \\10.1.2.3\data by drag&drop and I also cant get such a link to work by entering it manually. A link to a local folder does work though. I also cannot use a link that points to an XP mode application, with a file location pointing to rundll.exe and an argument list like %SystemRoot%\system32\VMCPropertyHandler.dll,LaunchVMSal “Windows XP Mode” “||860f3d20″ “MyAppName” or with %SystemRoot% replaced by its value. RunDLL complains about not finding the module (but the link works in explorer with the same argument string, but..as a hint: I get the same error with explorer when I change the VMCPropertyHandler.dll to some garbage). I read all the comments below, but may be missed something: do I still need quotes or so?

  • BigB

    Hello my friend,

I love your program! Thank you for your hard work. There is one small ‘bug’ that is easy to fix. When you create/add a “Folder” to your list, the box (box to choose the folder) comes up, but is not fully translated into English. When I choose “Add File”, everything is OK, no problems.

If I hit “Add Folder”, the box comes up with German words still.. “Abbrechen” and “Hilfe”… “Dateien”… “Verziechnes auswahlen”… 8/ I don’t know what these mean! :) Could you fix this small problem in the next release please? This was probably just something you didn’t see when making the English version.

Thank you for this program again! It is very good!!

    • BigB

Just for help (maybe to save you time), here are the correct English translations for this box (I looked them up). This is their direct translation to English:

      Verzeichnis Auswahlen = “Choose a folder…”
      Verzeichnisname: = “Folder name:”
      Verzeichnisse: = “Folder:”
      Dateien: (*.*) = “Files: (*.*)”
      Laufwerke: = “Drive:”
      Abbrechen = “Cancel”
      Hilfe = “Help”

I would change them myself, but I do not have the program code :)

  • Robert G.

After setting several entries, I moved JumplistLauncher.exe from downloads folder to it’s final destination and moved settings.dat into same folder.
Now launcher no longer shows entries from the taskbar – but still in launcher’s edit dialog. When I click on “Update Jumplist” I get an
    ACCESS VIOLATION!!!
How could fix this without losing my entries?

  • Robert G.

When I drag an Explorer link into Launcher config, the name of the link is not taken over to the launcher’s “Name: ” field.
    That’s pity.
I have a folder with about 70 explorer links for system management, e. g.:
    AutoPlay Settings ->
    %windir%\system32\control.exe /name Microsoft.AutoPlay
    Network Connections ->
    %WinDir%\system32\control.exe %WinDir%\system32\ncpa.cpl

Thus when dragging these into launcher, I get such meaningless links control or rundll etc.

Would be great if you added this feature.
    Thanks! Danke!
    Robert

    Hallo,

  • bushd

One thing that would be nice to see is the ability to add an entry that is folder displaying dynamic. What I mean by that is you have the ability to add folder shortcuts. Why not the ability to add a group that is a folder and the entries in said group are files in the folder. With the ability to control how many files from the folder to be displayed this would be the perfect addition.

Looks nice – but after populating the launch list with groups and files, the only program which successfully starts every time I click on an arbitrary entry on the list is…. JumplistLauncher. None of the programs in the launch list will start. Very strange….
    (Win7 Ultimate/64Bit, JumplistLauncher files located in %USERPROFILE%\Launcher)

Seems to happen with me, too. After a while I only have the default program accessible. The launcher seems to forget the “launch-listed” programms. It is necessary to re-install from scratch. (Win7 HP 64bit, JumplistLauncher files (multiple) located in %Userprofile%\Jumplist1…5

  • Honey Monster

    Hi

First, thank you for a great program. I appreciate all of your hard work.

I have some suggestions for improvements:

    1) Have an option to add a URL to the jumplist and use the URL’s favicon for the icon automatically. I can do this manually but it would be nice to do it automatically.

    2) Allow a single left click to open the jumplist if no default application is selected. (At the moment I have to click, hold and drag.)

    3) I would like to be able to copy jumplist entries and paste them into the same jumplist (or a different one).

    4) If I add entries or make changes, could the program automatically save these rather than making me click “Save Changes” or “Update Jumplist”?

    5) I’d love to have a jumplist that shows the last X recently opened documents. I can put a link the “Recent Items” folder, but cannot work out how to show the recent items in the folder not just the folder.

    6) Some error messages are not translated into English.

    7) Choosing icons for jumplist entries could be better: I’d like to be able to choose an icon from within an .exe, .dll or .icl file.

    8) It would be great if the last folder for choosing icons / files etc. were remembered.

Once again, thanks for a great program!

  • jimmy

The icons in the jumplist are very blur. It should display the 16×16 style of the icons. (sorry for my terrible English…)

    Wirklich tolles Tool!

    Hallo,

    Short version:
I seem to have it working now with just a minor issue.

    Long version:
I don’t know how many of these problems are my not quite having the program’s operation down yet and how many are little glitches caused by 64-bit Windows 7, so I’ll let you sift through all this (if you want to) to see what sounds like my just screwing up and what sounds like maybe a compatibility issue.

I clicked JumplistLauncher.exe and got a window with the title, “Unsupported 16-bit Application” that says (complete with misspelling of incompatibility):
    ===============
The program of feature “\??\C:\Windows\Installer\{ABC52DF9-2D42-4278-A152-CB2CD3ED8Fe91eb.exe” cannot start or run due to incompatibity with 64-bit versions of Windows. Please contact the software vendor to ask if a 64-bit Windows compatible version is available.
    ===============

When I click OK, I get a pop-up window titled “JumplistLauncher” with the message:
    ===============
    ===============

    The defaultstart.dat file contains “ C : \ W i n d o w s \ I n s t a l l e r \ { A B C 5 2 C F 9 – 2 D 4 3 – 4 2 7 8 – A 1 5 2 – C B 2 C D 3 E D 8 F E 9 } \ _ 2 6 e 9 1 e b . e x e ” When the program opened another program instead of Jumplist, the defaultstart.dat was the name of the other program.

However, as I was experimenting just now to see what it was doing, I realized part of the problem was that I forgot and left-clicked the JumplistLauncher icon instead of right-clicking it; that’s why it opened the other program — the first one on its list. Also, I deleted the info in the defaultstart.dat folder, and it let me start the program and get into the configuration setup. If I remember to click Configuration rather than JumplistLauncher, I seem to be able to get through to everything without error messages.

I *did* have one program change its location and had to re-enter the File location. And I *do* have the problem of a program’s disappearing from the list after I click it; that seemed to stop if I click the pin button for each program, but then I lose the folder grouping. I don’t know if this removal from the list is a bug or something I don’t understand; it shows in the Configuration, but it’s gone from the actual Tasbar pop-up. Ah — the Configuration had a check mark next to the name; so the Taskbar pop-up must delete what’s checked in Configuration. Is THAT supposed to happen?

And I just tried to add links to two Virtual Machines; but, when I click them in JumplistLauncher from the taskbar, I get the message window titled “JumplistLauncher:
    ===============
    ===============

Interestingly, now Configuration is missing from the JumplistLauncher but clciking JumplistLauncher in it now brings up the Configuration program. And now clicking on JumplistLauncher in the taskbar brings up Configuration, as well.

I started the program; it worked o.k. for a couple of minutes; I went to make changes, and it popped up a different program. I deleted everything, re-extracted, re-ran, and it tells me it’s not Windows 7 64-bit compatible. I’m not sure why it was *almost* working the first time and then says it can’t even run later, but……

Is it *really* not 64-bit compatible? Or did something just get stuck somewhere that needs to be removed before he re-install will work?

    Thanks,

    Richard

    • Ali

      Sounds strange.
      What’s the exact error-message?

It is compatible with 64-bit Windows 7.

Also it doesn’t install anything so there can’t be problem with unextracting and running it again.

It seems to me that the parameter option is broken in the latest available version (v7.1). Is there a way i can revert back to v6 where it did work or do you have some suggestions to get it to work?

I like to use multiple versions of Firefox and i need a couple of parameters in order to be able to do so in a jump list.

My jump list entry looks like this:
    Location:
    “%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Firefox Versions\Firefox Branch\firefox.exe”
    Parameter:
    -no-remote -profile “%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Firefox Versions\Firefox Branch\Profiles\Fresh”

    • Craig

Can anyone else confirm this? or offer a solution?

    • Ali

      I uploaded a new version of the Jumplist-Launcher 7.2

This one can finally handle environment variables.

Please give a short feedback if it works for you.

    • Craig

I have tried the item without environment variables as well. The new version doesn’t seem to have any effect on the behavior. For some reason it doesn’t call firefox.exe from the location i give. Even when i remove the parameters, it still calls my installed version of Firefox in “Program Files.” I am running an x64 version of Windows 7 Pro RTM if that helps.

    • Ali

Does starting the alternative Firefox-version with normal shortcuts work?

    • Craig

      Yes, it does.

    • Craig

It also used to work with v6

  • bug

“exception” on secondary ‘Program Files’ destination shortcut,

    “Cannot make jumplist”

    • Ali

Can you explain your problem a bit more detailed? I don’t get your point at the moment, sorry.

    Feature request:

Ability to copy an item btwn multiple jumplists

    • Ali

      Will be included ;)

  • humminahhumminah

    BUG/FEATURE REQUESTS:

    1) Do not rename shortcuts/exes on drag & drop
    2) Do not change / make new set of icons for each jumplists
    (for multiple jumplists)
    3) Ability to import/copy ANY group of shortcuts
    (mixed types – including scripts/shell/folders/system shortcuts/etc)
    4) Ability to use/import a folder of shortcuts as/for jumplist
(to enable mass import of an existing set of jumplist shortcuts)
    5) Ability to manage jumplist/s with explorer
(use folder/s for each shortcut ‘group’)
    6) Include an option to duplicate/create new/additional jumplists
(rather than having to copy each Jumplist-Launcher.exe/etc manually)
    7) Make exe (Doubleclick) go to jumplist menu by default
(registry setting? or could this be ‘Jumplist’ specific?)
    8) Transparency options? (adjustable) :-)
    9) Keep up the great work! :-)

    • me aslo

      Awesome program!

Batch import multiple folders or mixed shortcuts under Windows 7 Ult RTM does not work for me either.

Also getting “cannot make jumplist error” (on batch import).

Really like the idea of having the ability to import a folder as a jumplist for manageability also, can you implement this?

Transparancy would also be a great idea.

btw noticed your todo list: idea of a single executeable is good, but only if it doesnt require the program to continue running 24/7. :)

    • Ali

1.) What do you mean exactly?
      2.) I don’t understand that either.
3.) This matter will be investigated
4.) I have an idea of what you mean, but am not sure, so please give me some more details
5.) Not planned, but XML-format is planned for the settings-file
6.) I’m working on this soon
      7.) Superbar-items don’t react to double-clicks
      8.) For the config-window?

      @me_aslo:
What do you mean with batch-import?

I will consider the folder thing.

Multi-Jumplist ability won’t require running the Jumplist-Launcher all the time.

    • neFAST

      A) Try to add a shortcut as a new item. The icon, the name and the target will be lost.

  • urock

Great Program! couple little bugs & requests for improvements…

    BUG:

    1) changing the taskbar icon for jumplist-launcher does not work for me either. (Changing any other taskbar icon works for me also).
    2) drag and dropping (any type of) a group of shortcuts from other folders (mixed types or not) does not work at all reliablely unfortunetely.

    IMPROVEMENT/FEATURE REQUESTS:

    1) Managing multple Jumplist-Launchers is much to cumbersome, (especiallly for ppl with disabilities), and this is why:

    I’ve always made my own jumplists by doing the following;

1)make an ‘ALT-255′ (noname) dir for each jumplist/menulist i want, and
2)dumping ANY type of shorcuts in it/them, then
3)right click taskbar add new toolbar and selecting the ALT-255 dir/s i created and adding them to taskbar. (1 menu per group of shortcuts i use).

I have been doing it this way since early days of XP, which is a much easier easy to manage your Jumplist/Custom Menus…

…which is more or less the same thing as the new Windows 7 Jumplists, BUT now prettier and with the ability to use a Hotkey to bring up each jumplists/menu… (Windows+Alt+0-9) BUT with one major issue…

for example with the OLD method, you can use the same folders for multiple Windows OS’s or users or workstations, etc… simply by managing the folder as u would any other folder…

Which brings me to my question, for possible SOLUTIONS/IMPROVEMENTS:

    1) Enable the ability to organize and manage our (multiple) shortcut types and (multiple) jumplists more easily by way of using folders (as well as) a point & click interface because i currently have 5 of these types of menulists to maintain, and i share them with other workstations. (because it is much too difficult and time consuming currently, especially for Carpal Tunnel People / Repetetive Strain people…

    Hope my input helps! :)

Btw… would there be some way to make the menu lists transparent/peek-able? :)

    • urock

Wanted to say your program is really great and its coming along quite nicely, and one thing i really like about it is that it is not resident (does not use memory). :)

      EDIT:

      1) Could you please find a way to enable your great program to have the ability to organize and manage our (multiple) shortcut types and (multiple) jumplists more easily by way of using folders (as well as) a point & click interface because i currently have 5 of these types of menulists to maintain, and i share them with other workstations. (and currently it is difficult and time consuming currently, especially for Carpal Tunnel People / Repetetive Strain people to manage multiplejumplists currently…

Reason being: Im just staring at my old 5 menus and 5 new blue folder jumplist icons on my taskbar and i am still debating whether or not i want to continue with the manual creation of 5 NEW menus that i cant share with other machines, because with v7.1 of Jumplist-Launcher it does not like my groups of shorcuts and only seems to work (properly) if i add each shortcut manually = not fun and painfull because i have carpal tunnel syndrome.

Btw did i say your U rock?!! Especially for a DJ! How do you make time for this stuff. lol. :-)

    • Ali

I’m working on the ability to manage multiple Jumplists within one application, which will be a lot easier to handle.

I’m sceptical about the “use folder as Jumplist”-thing and other things have definately priority over it.

What do you want to be transparent?
The Jumplist or the configuration-windows of the Jumplist-Launcher?

  • Matt Weiler

I love the app, but I have a few more things that would be nice:

    1) Auto-update notification (popup to inform if new version is available, you have webspace, not a big deal to throw a xml file on there :) )

    2) If the main configuration window is resized, save that for the next execution of the application, just ensure that the window size isn’t too big for the users monitor(s). Don’t keep the window location in case someone starts the app with a 2nd monitor connected, and runs the app on that 2nd monitor, but then runs it again with only 1 monitor :(

    • Billy Bob

Changing Jumplist-Launcher taskbar icon does not work (even after reboot). (Changing any other icon works), and cannot change icon of actual .exe

    • Ali

      All good ideas, Matt.
      Added to my own ToDo-list.

      @Billy Bob:
How are you trying to change the icon?
In my example I created a shortcut to Jumplist-Launcher.exe and changed it’s icon.

    • Matt Weiler

I wrote a small app to test changing the application icon.
As long as the application is not “pinned” to the taskbar, it’s icon changed when I changed it via code, but once the application is “pinned” to the taskbar, it does not change in the taskbar (the Windows form still changes it’s icon on the top left corner). Windows must be caching the icons of each “pinned” taskbar applications somewhere.

But, it is definitely possible since there are applications that modify their icon, even when they’re “pinned” to the Windows 7 taskbar. (IE8 – when it’s downloading something, it animates the icon) I just don’t have time to look through the Microsoft Windows 7 taskbar API :(

Good luck and your application is really useful :)
      Thanks again

  • Matt Weiler

I like your implementation but there are some slight bugs/tweaks needed.

    1) [BUG] When adding a new “item” to a group, after the item is added, the last element (item or group) is selected. If you press the “Save Changes” button the last element (item or group) is altered to have the new items info.
    –Solutions (either one would work):
    a) give focus to the newly added item
    b) un-select all elements after a new item is added (disable the “Save Changes” button and clear the “Selected Entry” fields)

    2) [TWEAK] When selecting an item to be the “default-run application”, you add an entry to the bottom of the jump-list for “configuration”. If the user has more items in their jump-list than Windows allows, the ones at the bottom are ignored.
    –Solution:
The “configuration” entry should be moved to the top of the jump-list.
Also, upon the applications starting-up, if the user has removed the “configuration” item via the built-in Windows method (right-click element in jump-list and “Remove from this list”), your app should re-add that entry before executing the “default-run application” and shutting-down, otherwise the only way to re-execute your application is to remove the “defaultstart.dat” file that you make and then running it.

    3) [TWEAK] I’m not sure how possible this is as I haven’t done any development with the new Windows7 taskbar, but I assume that if you change the application icon for your exe, the icon displayed in the taskbar would also change. If so, then it’d be nice that if an jump-list item was set as “default start”, it’s icon would be visible on the taskbar.

    • Ali

      1.) I will fix this

2.) People aren’t supposed to remove that item.
I personally don’t want to move it to the top because for me the most important things are at the top.
I will think about a better solution.

3.) This is sadly not possible. I tried it and it won’t change.
